HALIFAX COMMUNITY COLLEGE

Halifax Community College (HCC) is building on the work of the Roanoke Valley Health & Wellness Committee (RVHWC) and the Community Health, Wellness and Education Clinic (CHWEC) to continue to address cardiac issues by providing alternatives to sedentary activities in the county.

HCC serves as a neutral, central location for the coordination of community health events that will feature both the Roanoke Valley Fitness Interactive Trail and the Roanoke Canal Trail. They will also increase community-campus interaction with community members of all ages by engaging with local police and fire departments, reaching out to Head Start and Smart Start childcare centers, and providing dental screenings through the HCC Dental Clinic. In hiring a project coordinator and a student health and wellness intern, this initiative will connect to institutional practice at the college as health care organizations Prevention Partners Work Healthy America will advise changes to their health and wellness courses and their guiding policy document.

The Roanoke Valley Community Health Initiative is a collaboration across the entire community to create an infrastructure of community health. With the support of the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust, was formed in 2011 to address and improve overall health of Halifax and Northampton counties. The organization brings together over 40 diverse organizations, individuals, and businesses to overcome the pressing challenge of childhood obesity and improve the overall health of the community.

Community Collaboration

The Roanoke Valley Fitness Interactive Trail is located in a visible, accessible, well-lit area of Halifax Community College campus, welcoming community members as well as intramural sports. Check out the RVCHI Places to Play map below for more Halifax healthy places.
