Community Inspirations

Richard Joyner of Conetoe Family Life Center works with young people to grow produce and keep bees, stating, "By nourishing plants, you're nourishing community. It's one and the same."

Berry Hines of Bee Blessed Pure Honey gives presentations at schools, for scouts, and garden clubs.

Frank Newell of Eastern Bluebird Group presents an assortment of wildlife programs for a variety of groups in the community for conservation education.

The Down East Partnership for Children was established in 1993 to commit to launching every child as a healthy lifelong learner.

ECC is collaborating with the Boys and Girls Club, local childcare centers, and summer camps to invite children and their caregivers to the playscape.

EDGECOMBE COMMUNITY COLLEGE

The Edgecombe Community College (ECC) natural playscape has increased access to outdoor green space for many local child care centers and families in our community. Due to transportation issues for community members in the area, ECC will create accessible community garden boxes to reduce obesity through food education, access to healthy food and exercise with regular garden upkeep.

Volunteers from the local church, schools, and broader community will participate in workdays and workshops to build and maintain the gardens and learn to integrate nutrition into their curricula and lives.
